Former corrections officer indicted on sexual conduct charges

A former McMinn County Corrections Officer has been indicted following the May session of the Grand Jury.
In a release made available on Thursday afternoon, McMinn County Sheriff Joe Guy stated an internal investigation on the matter was undertaken by his office in April. Guy stated several substantiated allegations were made against a former corrections officer for inappropriate actions involving a female inmate.
The Grand Jury returned with an indictment on the officer. MORE

Cop wins showdown

An Athens Police Department officer drew his firearm on a suspect Wednesday evening after the suspect allegedly threatened him with a knife outside Athens Regional Medical Center.

  • Four are arrested on meth charges
    Four Athens residents were charged with making methamphetamine after Athens Police Department officers discovered five labs at the Load Street residence they had been dispatched to early Sunday morning on a disturbance call.
  • Central graduation is Friday
    ENGLEWOOD - McMinn Central High School will be conferring diplomas upon 180 graduating seniors on Friday night.
    The ceremony, which will start at 7:30 p.m., will be held in the gymnasium at the high school. According to the school's guidance office, doors will open at 6:30 p.m.
  • Athens won't close crossing
    Railroad said it would pay, city says redesign too costly

    The Athens City Council rejected a proposal by Norfolk Southern Corp. to close the railroad closing at Sterling Road.
    Members of the City Council were opposed to closure because it would result in there being only one way in and out of that street for garbage trucks and emergency personnel.

    East Ridge pitcher Ashley Irvin struck out 10, scattered five hits and provided the go-ahead run with a solo home run in the fifth inning to give the Lady Pioneers a 2-1 victory over Meigs County in the Region 3-AA tournament semifinal game on Tuesday.
